Boudoir Photoshoot Prep Guide: How to Prepare for a Powerful, Elevated Experience

By Amanda Plummer Photography

Boudoir isn’t about becoming someone else.

It’s about revealing who you already are — confidently, beautifully, unapologetically.

Whether this is your first boudoir experience or a return to yourself, preparation isn’t about perfection. It’s about intention. This guide will walk you through exactly how to prepare for your boudoir photoshoot so you can arrive relaxed, confident, and fully present for an experience designed entirely around you.

Why Boudoir Is More Than a Photoshoot

A boudoir session is a pause. A moment to step out of the noise of daily life and into your body, your power, your story. My approach to boudoir photography is intentionally slow, refined, and deeply personal — designed to help you feel supported every step of the way.

This prep guide isn’t about rules. It’s about setting yourself up to feel grounded, confident, and cared for before you ever step in front of the camera.

1. Start With Intention (This Is Everything)

Before outfits or logistics, ask yourself one simple question:

Why am I doing this?

Maybe you’re celebrating a milestone. Maybe you’re reclaiming confidence. Maybe you just want to see yourself differently — without apology or expectation.

Your reason doesn’t need to be big or poetic. It just needs to be yours.

Tip: Write your intention down. Read it the morning of your session. Let it anchor you.

2. Prepare Your Mindset (Confidence Is Built, Not Required)

Almost every client tells me they’re nervous. That’s normal — and expected. Confidence isn’t something you need to bring with you. It’s something that unfolds as the experience begins.

You will be guided through posing, expression, and movement. You will never be asked to perform or pretend. My job is to create a space where you can soften, breathe, and show up exactly as you are.

💭 Helpful reminders:

  • You do not need to change your body.
  • You do not need to know how to pose.
  • You do not need to be “ready.”

This experience meets you where you are — and elevates you from there.

3. Skin, Hair & Body Prep (Glow Without Stress)

Hydration & Skincare

In the days leading up to your session, prioritize hydration and rest. Healthy, hydrated skin photographs beautifully and feels better, too.

  • Stick to your regular skincare routine
  • Avoid new products or aggressive treatments right before your shoot
  • Gentle exfoliation 2–3 days prior is perfect

Hair & Makeup

Professional hair and makeup are included in your session for a reason — so you can fully relax and enjoy being taken care of.

  • Wash and dry your hair the night before or morning of
  • Arrive with clean skin and no makeup unless instructed otherwise
  • Trust the process — the look is designed specifically for you and your session style

4. What to Wear for Your Boudoir Session

Wardrobe should feel intentional — not intimidating. The best outfits are the ones that make you feel confident the moment you put them on.

Wardrobe Guidelines

  • Bring 3–5 outfit options for variety
  • Choose pieces that fit comfortably and make you feel powerful
  • Mix textures: lace, silk, knits, structured pieces
  • Bodysuits, lingerie sets, oversized sweaters, button-downs, or even a jacket can photograph beautifully

If something pinches, shifts constantly, or makes you self-conscious — leave it behind.

Less is more. Confidence always photographs best.

5. What to Bring to Your Boudoir Session

Pack the night before so your shoot day feels calm and unrushed.

Your Boudoir Prep Checklist:

  • All outfits + coordinating undergarments
  • Heels or barefoot options
  • Simple jewelry or statement accessories
  • Robe or cover-up for between looks
  • Lipstick or gloss for touch-ups
  • Water and a light snack

Optional personal touches — perfume, sunglasses, a favorite piece — can add intimacy and individuality to your images.

6. The Night Before & Day Of

The Night Before

  • Avoid heavy alcohol or salty foods
  • Get a good night’s rest
  • Lay out loose clothing to wear to your session (to avoid skin marks)

The Morning Of

  • Eat a light, nourishing meal
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing
  • Arrive with clean, dry hair if receiving styling

Most importantly: arrive as you are. There is nothing you need to “fix” before stepping into the studio.

7. During Your Session: Trust the Experience

You will be gently guided through everything — from how to move your hands to where to place your gaze. Every adjustment is intentional, designed to highlight your natural shape and presence.

There is no rushing. No pressure. Just a refined, supportive experience where you are the focus.

Many clients tell me the most unexpected part of boudoir is how grounding it feels.

8. After Your Session: Let It Land

Once your session ends, take a moment to acknowledge what you did. Showing up for yourself — especially in a world that constantly asks you to shrink — is powerful.

Your images are more than photographs. They are a reminder of your strength, softness, and presence in this season of your life.

Final Thought

Boudoir is not about perfection.

It’s about permission.

Permission to be seen.

Permission to take up space.

Permission to honor yourself — exactly as you are.

When you prepare with intention and trust the process, the result is a collection of images that feel timeless, emotive, and unmistakably you.
